Why do we blame personality instead of circumstances?
When others mess up it's who they are; when you do it's the situation.
When explaining other people's behavior, we tend to overweight personal traits and underweight situational factors. Someone who cuts you off in traffic is a reckless jerk - not someone who might be rushing to an emergency.
He cut you off because he's a reckless jerk - you cut someone off because you were rushing to a hospital.
Other people's actions feel like character; your own feel like circumstances.
Assume a situation you can't see before you judge someone's character - you'd want the same.
Their fault is character, yours is context.
